Alongside the opening of the top floor at Effinger, we have proposed the installation of an outdoor LoRaWAN antenna. This would put Effinger on the TTN gateways map (screenshot above), providing a service to the community in Bern. We intend to combine this gateway with the addition of several indoor nodes in the space.

The Things Network (TTN) is an online community, organizing hackathons and workshops around Switzerland about self-managed open source hardware and networks for the Internet of Things - typically used for environmental sensing. There is a meetup group that has been a regular at Effinger for a few years. In the context of a coworking space, this could mean collecting environmental data such as:

  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Air quality
  • Noise and light levels
  • People counting
  • Locks & doors

.. and putting it together into a live dashboard or a historical chart to visualize trends. Understanding the environment and supporting "smart office" projects can improve the quality of life for people using the space. It can also raise important questions about surveillance, energy usage, or sovereignty. It is also a good way to learn about networking, Internet applications, radio techniques, and more.
